Tuesday 18 March 2025 at 16:00-17:30 GMT, Barbara Williams will be answering questions after the half-hour pre-recorded presentation ‘Paths to Paradigm Shift’ is played, see below. The workshop is hosted by the Schumacher Institute. If you wish to attend, please email marsha@schumacherinstitute.org.uk. Current Events | The Schumacher Institute

If you live near Oxford, and you are concerned about the direction that humanity is heading right now, you might enjoy coming to a ‘Join the Dots’ session hosted by me, Barbara Williams, either at my home in Yarnton or a location of your choice. We shall explore evidence of the ecocidal qualities of growth economics that are evident from the insights of the I=PAT equation and the data on ecological overshoot. There is a reading list available for further background. Please email bw@poemsforparliament.uk to arrange a ‘Join the Dots’ session at a time and place that suits you.

There is some parking in the cul-de-sac, and on my drive, but please don’t block in my neighbours. The S3 bus route stops outside my house, but the late buses are infrequent.

Yew Tree Cottage, 3-5 Cassington Rd, YARNTON, OX5 1QA

Yew Tree Cottage is a large thatched cottage very hidden from the road. If you are taking the Cassington Rd from the Turnpike roundabout you need to turn into the first cul-de-sac on your left, just before the tiny thatched cottage shown in the picture below.

Mindset shift from Settler/Colonialism

The British Empire was founded on an arrogant sense of superiority and entitlement. It is important to appreciate that this settler colonial mindset is still deeply ingrained in the thinking of the rich and powerful people who control our commerce and politics; reporters like Matt Kennard, and LowKey are explaining how these powerful people influence and disable democracy.

By understanding the recent history of Israel, you will grasp the injustice and brutality of the settler colonial mindset. To acquire this background you might enjoy this explanation of the present-day ongoing Zionist project. I recommend watching the final six minutes as a minimum; then watch the Channel 4 interview with a Jewish mother originally from Texas who now wishes to settle in Gaza; the interview is very revealing; Novara Media do a helpful analysis of what we can learn from the interview.

Just like the mindset required for indefinite economic growth on a finite planet, the settler/colonial mindset is not realistic. Israel is already in dire ecological overshoot. If every person of Jewish ethnicity chose to emigrate to Israel, the reliance of Israel on external finance and fossil fuels for survival would escalate even further. The graph below is from the public data resources available at the Global Footprint Network. The shocking overshoot is nearly as bad as that of a dessert petrostate like Dubai.
